How to Clean Your Fire Helmet

It's time to walk you through a step-by-step overview of how to clean your helmet effectively. Proper fire helmet maintenance is crucial for both exposure reduction and extending the life of your gear. So, let's dive into the process and ensure your helmet is in top-notch condition.

Safety First

Before we embark on the cleaning journey, it's important to prioritize safety. The individual cleaning the helmet should don a pair of examination gloves, an apron, and safety glasses or goggles. These precautions create a safe environment for the cleaning process.

Step 1: Detach and Separate Components

Begin by removing any detachable or separate components such as ear covers, suspension covers, and goggles from the helmet. These components should be washed and dried separately. Textile-based detachable elements can be hand-washed individually or cleaned in a washer extractor along with garments or hoods.

Step 2: Prepare the Utility Sink

With the components removed, it's time to prepare the utility sink. Fill it with warm water, ensuring the temperature does not exceed 40 degrees Celsius or 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Choose a mild detergent with a pH between 6.0 and 10.5, following the manufacturer's recommended ratio of detergent to water.

Step 3: Hand Wash and Brush

Hand wash any attached face shields using a soft cloth. Utilize a soft bristle brush to reach between components and scrub both the exterior and interior of the helmet. Thoroughly rinse the helmet after washing, ensuring all detergent is removed.

Step 4: Air Dry

Once the cleaning process is complete, allow the helmet to air dry. Using a soft towel to aid in drying can speed up the process and ensure all moisture is eliminated. Avoid machine cleaning or drying, as this could compromise the integrity of the helmet.

Your helmet is now clean and ready for action. Regular maintenance not only ensures the longevity of your gear but also contributes to your overall safety.
